The international Christian community will observe Good Friday on April 14 this year. Christians will commemorate the day of crucifixion of Jesus Christ with prayers, masses and special events. Good Friday is observed as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The day is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Following which preparations for Easter is made when Jesus rose from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Dramas portraying Jesus’ crucifixion is performed at churches all over the world. Special programmes on his journey from his arrest to crucifixion are played during the ceremony.
In some countries like Germany, dancing and horse racing is prohibited on the day considering the nature of the day. Pope Francis will preside over the Good Friday commemoration at the Vatican. Good Friday is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday in different countries. The day is called Good Friday because of the word “good” which means holy or pious. There are various theories on how the day is referred to as good while it is a day actually marks Jesus’ crucifixion. According to certain theories, the term ‘Good’ originates from an older name for the day, ‘God’s Friday’. While some say the term ‘Good’ is appropriate as suffering and death of Jesus marked God’s plan to save people from their sins. Many Christians observe this day with fasting, prayer and repentance on the suffering of Christ. It is believed that Christ died for the sins of people and hence followers of Christ meditate in his name. The days are observed as per Biblical events which talk about the death of Jesus on the cross, his burial and resurrection.
