Google Doodle celebrates the 100th birthday of one of India’s most renowned and multifaceted artists, M.F. Husain. The legendary artist, who passed away on June 9th, 2011, at the age of 95 was called “The Picasso of India.”

Maqbool Fida Husain, commonly known as M.F. Husain’s first love happened to be cinema and he originally intended to become a film director in Bombay. However, he could not pursue his dream and in order to survive had to look for some other work. M.F. Hussain started off as a painter who would paint film billboards and make toys as well.

After picking painting for his livelihood it eventually became his passion. Hussain found The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG) and his inspiration came by the changes in India in the late 1940s. He and his fellow artists endeavoured to address Indian themes, culture and people in a modern way. The group tried their level best in bringing the Indian art to an international audience.

Husain’s energetic painting of horses and serial depictions of classic narratives such as the Mahabharata made him a well-known artist. He then wrote and directed his first film- Through the Eyes of a Painter.
