Gurmehar Kaur, the daughter of a Kargil war hero and the Delhi University student, is leading the campaign against the lawlessness of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) witnessed at DU’s Ramjas College. Her courageous stand has earned Gurmehar the tag of ‘anti-national’ by the online trolls which unfortunately features celebrities like former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag and Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda. The 20-year-old girl is bullied savagely on the internet with netizens mocking her with Virat Kohli, Salman Khan, and other memes. In fact, BJP MP Pratap Simha compared Gurmehar Kaur with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Hitler and many more antagonists from past by tweeting memes taking a dig at girl’s original Facebook post. Time and again, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has proved to be above law and order. On February 15, a fight broke out between All India Students Association (AISA) and ABVP over the cancellation of JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid who were supposed to speak at a seminar. Gurmehar Kaur, a DU student came into the spotlight and eventually became the target of trolls when she started a campaign against ABVP. After the DU’s Ramjas College clash, Kaur had changed her profile picture on Facebook holding a placard which read: “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP.”

She started a social media post which had the girl sending out the message – “Pakistan did not kill my dad. War killed him.” Gurmehar’s father, Captain Mandeep Singh was martyred in the 1999 Kargil War. This post went viral on the internet, and the girl was heavily criticized by the self-proclaimed patriots so much so that she was threatened with dire consequences including ‘gang-rape’ threats.

The face of the brave campaign against ABVP, Gurmehar Kaur registered a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Woman (DCW) for receiving rape threats. She said, “I have been getting a lot of threats on social media. I think it is very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape.”

In response to Gurmehar Kaur’s stand, BJP MP Pratap Simha tweeted a picture comparing her with terrorist leader Dawood Ibrahim. His caption reads: “At least Dawood did not use the crutches of his father’s name to justify his anti-national stand.” Simha represents Mysore in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju tweeted, “Who’s polluting this young girl’s mind? A strong Arm Force prevents a war. India never attacked anyone but a weak India was always invaded.”

Sad reality remains that influencers like former Indian cricketing icon like Virender Sehwag joined the trolls in taking down a 20-year-old girl. Sehwag who has become a Twitter sensation for his witty posts was at his unfunny self as he took a subtle dig at Gurmehar Kaur. The Delhi batsman holding a placard read: “I didn’t score two triple centuries, my bat did.”
Sehwag received support from self-claimed righteous Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda who joined in the laughter and trivializing a serious issue like this raised by Gurmehar Kaur. Several memes are made by netizens using faces of Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan to poke fun at Gurmehar Kaur.
