The Hindu festival Vasant Panchami or Basant Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami. The day is celebrated with great pomp and fervour every year. This year, Basant Panchami falls today, i.e. on January 22. This day marks the arrival of spring and harvest after the winter season. Basant Panchami is also a day dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati’s birthday falls on Basant Panchami. Hence, many perform Saraswati puja on this day. Delving into the significance of this day throws up many interesting reasons. Hindu mythology states that Lord Rama ate the half tasted grapes by Shabari on Basant Panchami and the day is celebrated in a bid to commemorate this gesture. People also consider the day to be the beginning of life and happiness and spring is popularly known as the season of rebirth. Many famous personalities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and chef Ranveer Brar took to Twitter to convey their good wishes on this occasion.
Another interesting mythological fact on Basant Panchami is that Lord Brahma created the universe on Basant Panchami. The festival marks the end of days of ignorance and marks the beginning of the period of joy and awakening. Across the countries and in different corners of the world, Basant Panchami is celebrated with a lot of joy and happiness. The colour ‘yellow’ is given importance on this day and is considered auspicious as it represents spiritual knowledge, light and prosperity among others. Rituals are performed at home and in temples, and educational institutes organize cultural events and competitions to celebrate the occasion. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind, to cricketer VVS Laxman and chef Ranveer Brar, many renowned personalities took to Twitter to convey their good wishes on the occasion of Basant Panchami.
