Lath Maar Holi played in Barsana and Nandagaon villages, located near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh is a recreation of a famous Hindu legend, according to which, Lord Krishna (who hailed from the Nandgaon village) visited his beloved Radha’s town, Barsana. ‘Lathamar’ means ‘playing with sticks’. The traditional ‘Lathamar Holi’ started with pomp at Barsana village here, as couples celebrated the colourful festival with utmost zeal amid a tight security put in place by district authorities. The annual event said to be observed for last 5000 years in Barsana and Nandgaon villages is welcomed with enthusiasm and historical pride. The celebration of Holi here is marked by a subtle blending of music and dance by local youngsters who enthrall the visitors from across the globe.
During the famous widows’ Holi celebrations in Vrindavan, numerous widows shun taboos in India to enjoy the colourful festival. On March 9, 2017, around 1000 widows from Varanasi and Vrindavan took part in Holi celebrations at the Gopinath temple in the town of Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
