Holi, also known as the festival of colors is the perfect time to celebrate with family and friends. The onset of Holi coincides with the auspicious Full Moon day in the month of Phalgun and this year, it will be celebrated on March 13, 2017. This festival denotes the arrival of spring and brings new hope and new beginnings. It lasts for two days, beginning with Holika Dahan (fire puja) which will be on March 12 this year and conclude with a playful riot of colors, when people smear colored powder gulal or throw coloured water on each other to wish their loved ones on March 12 this year. Mythologically, the festival of Holi is significantly related to Lord Krishna who played with Radha and his Gopis, smearing colors on each others’ faces, also known as Rang Panchami. This traditional age-old Hindu festival also symbolises the ushering of good beginnings and triumph over evil.

Along with these festivities, various savories are prepared and consumed with family and friends. On the auspicious occasion of Holi, here are some lip-smacking dishes for the festive season which includes Puran Poli, Shakarpara and Gujias, Thandai, Kheer, Basundi, and Halva. 1. Gujiyas / Gujias:

These are sweet dumplings made of suji, maida flour or wheat flour and stuffed with khoya. This is a traditional sweet savory made in Rajasthan. This dumpling looks like a samosa but has a distinct shape and often contains roasted dry fruits and coconut to enhance its taste. There are different types of Gujiyas and include Baked Gujiya, Chocolate Gujiya, Coconut Gujiya.

This is a traditional sweet which is made in North India and is similar to a pancake. Malpua is fried in ghee and later on dipped in sugar syrup. One needs to have ingredients like mixing maida, rawa and khoya/mawa to prepare Malpua.

3. Bhang ki Pakori:

Bhaang is a popular intoxicating drink which is prepared and consumed in large quantities during Holi. It is believed that bhang is an auspicious drink and was consumed by Lord Shiva. But have you heard of Bhang ki Pakori? Now, this sounds interesting. You all must have tried Bhaang in the form of liquid, but consuming bhaang in the form of pakoda is quite unusual. So if you are tired of eating everything sweet, you should give this steaming hot Bhang Pakora a try. Bhaang ki Pakori is made up of crunchy onion, potato, and bhaang which are mixed well and dipped in chickpea flour batter.

Holi celebrations are totally incomplete without consuming Bhaang, which is the most loved and popular traditional intoxicating drink. But there is also Thandai which is prepared from the leaves and flowers of the female cannabis plant with a mixture of almonds, fennel seeds, magaztari seeds, rose petals, pepper, vetiver seeds, cardamom, saffron, milk and sugar is added in it later. This drink is refershing and sensational.

This is a popular snack prepared in North India which is stuffed with arhar dal and spices and then fried crisp.

6. Dahi Bhalla or Dahi Kachori:

Try your hand at making lip-smacking delicious fluffy bhallas which can be consumed with curd or chutney. One needs to have ingredients like moong dal, urad dal, zeera, chironji. This deep-fried dish tastes sweet and salty.

7. Dhuska:

This dish is basically originated from Bihar and Jharkhand. Dhuska is a snack which is made up of rice flour and chana dal. It is served with aloo curry and green chutney.

8. Puran Poli:

This dish is a sweet flatbread especially made in Maharashtrian households on the occasion of Holi and is quite popular. For making Puran Poli one requires yellow gram daal, cardamom, jaggery and grated coconut. Later on, the wheat rolled bread is properly roasted in ghee or oil. Sometimes a pinch of turmeric is added to it to enhance its taste.

9. Shankarpali:

Shankarpali also popularly known as Shakkarpali is another famous Maharashtrian dish and is prepared during Holi and Diwali festival. For preparing Shankarpali one requires dough, milk, sugar, ghee, maida, semolina and salt.

10. Kesar Chawal:

Saffron rice or Kesar Chawal is made using Basmati rice, saffron, vegetable bouillon, ghee, and bay leaves cooked to perfection.

11. Coconut Laddoo:

This recipe can be made with condensed milk, jaggery or khoya, added to grated coconut and one can even add sugar syrup to enhance its taste. There are various ways to prepare coconut laddoo and for preparing this one needs to use dried or dessicated coconut.

12. Lavang Latika:

This is a traditional North Indian sweet dish which is stuffed and deep-fried and later on soaked in sugar syrup. We bet you that your kids will absolutely love this dish. One needs to have wheat flour, ghee, water, clove, sugar, salt and oil to prepare the same.

Indian pudding also known as phirni which is a staple and compulsory dish served during the Holi festival. This recipe essentially needs nutty caramel and brown rice and the addition of saffron and pistachios adds texture, aroma and taste.  One can even add different flavours including orange, strawberry, chocolate to this dish and get creative.

14. Kachori Sabzi:

This northern dish is a snack made up of spinach and beetroot. What can be more healthier than this? One can have this with your choice of sabzi but it tastes best with hare lehsun aur aloo ki sabzi.

15. Besan Ladoo:

These ladoos are certainly the most liked and loved dessert and prepared during Holi and also Diwali festival. It is believed that the Ladoo was  Lord Ganesha‘s favorite sweet and during pujas it is served in the form of prasad. Besan Ladoo is prepared with sugar syrup, khoya (mawa) and ghee.
