New Delhi: Today, on August 15 when the nation is celebrating its 78th Independence Day, we take you down the memory lane and share with you the evolution of India’s National Flag which started more than a 100 years ago.
The first national flag was hoisted in 1906 in Calcutta (present day Kolkata) during the Swadeshi and Boycott movement. It had green, yellow, and red stripes, and eight lotus symbols.
A similar flag was hoisted in 1907. Tricolour with saffron, white, and green stripes, and Mahatma Gandhi’s spinning wheel symbol was adopted in 1931.
The present-day flag was adopted on July 22, 1947.
The Ministry of Culture has shared a video on X depicting the different dates and how the Indian flag was concurrently changed.
