American space agency NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is all set to return to Earth with Barry Wilmore after a nearly 10-month mission on the International Space Station (ISS). The mission was supposed to be a 10-day affair but turned into a marathon mission due to major technical glitches. NASA has given the green light to the relief mission for the astronauts, and SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft will launch a crew to bring the astronauts back.
On Saturday, March 8, NASA announced that Crew 9, including astronauts Williams, Wilmore, Nick Hague, and Aleksandr Gorbunov, will return to Earth only after Crew 10 reaches the ISS. Notably, Crew 10 is all set to launch on March 12 at 7:48 EDT.
“So, for the March 12 launch for Crew 10, Crew 9 undock will be on March 16,” a NASA official said at a teleconference.

As a NASA astronaut, Williams falls under the US government’s General Schedule (GS) pay scale grade, – grades GS-13 through GS-15.
According to the available data, GS-13 astronauts can earn between USD 81,216 (Rs 6,746,968) to USD 105,579 (Rs 8,769,057) annually.
While GS-15 astronauts who have sufficient experience receives a salary between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1.27 crore per annum.
So, Williams’ salary can be anywhere between Rs.7 lakh 30 thousand and Rs.9 lakh 50 thousand.
Apart from salary, NASA employees also get many facilities. They get facilities like house rent allowance, car loan etc. Astronauts like Williams also get health insurance from NASA.
Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore began a 10-day mission on the Boeing Starliner on June 5, 2024. However, the spacecraft encountered issues with its thrusters while attempting to approach and dock.
