Christmas is just around the corner and people have already started decorating and preparing for the special day. Christmas or X’Mas is celebrated every year to mark the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. Christmas is the start of the Christian liturgical year and initiates the 12 days of Christmastide. The occasion ends after the twelfth night and is celebrated by both Christian and non-Christians with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm.

Christmas is also the time when people exchange gifts and greetings. Traditional Christmas carols are based on religion and they basically focus on the birth of Jesus. To understand from where exactly the celebration started, lets have a look at the history. The Bible contains two accounts which explain the birth of Jesus Christ. Mother Virgin Mary was engaged to Joseph, when miraculously she conceived through the Holy Spirit, foretold to her by an angel. Further, the angel said that the name of the child would be Jesus and he was the Messiah, the God for everyone. We all know that Jesus was born to Virgin Mary and Joseph in the city of Bethlehem.

Jesus was born in a stable surrounded by farm animals, wherein Mother Mary wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger. Soon the Shepherds from the fields were been informed about the birth of Jesus by an angel. These shepherds were the first ones to see the child, apart from them three kings named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar who visited baby Jesus. Further there is also a long description in the Gospel of Matthew about visitors like astrologers and other people who brought along several gifts. It is also said that the visitors were following the mysterious star that is known as the Star of Bethlehem.
