The winner of today’s Idiot of the Day is the lovely couple from Goa who have taken it upon themselves to define and defend Indian culture – Deepak Dhavalikar and Lata Dhavalikar.
Deepak and Lata Dhavalikar – the defenders of Hindu faith
Politicians from Goa are currently leading the ‘say the stupidest thing feasible’ contest. We heard about government’s plans to normalise ‘homosexuals’ while their venerable Chief Minister handed out marital tips to protesting nurses (who incidentally won our prize earlier). Now we have two more winners –Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MP Deepak Dhavalikar and his lovely wife Lata. First up, we had Lata Dhavalikar telling us exactly how Hindu men and women should behave.
‘Hindu men, while leaving from home, should sport a tilak, while women, kumkum. Always celebrate Gudi Padwa as the Hindu New Year and not January 1. Don’t send your children to convent school… say ‘namaskar’ instead of ‘hello’ when answering a phone call,’ she said. ‘It’s time we took pride in our rich ancient Indian culture. Now it has become trendy among Indian women not to wear ‘kumkum’ on forehead; wearing tight and revealing clothes, trimming hair and sporting weird hairdos. Incidents of rape are on the rise, largely owing to the fact that women have adopted western culture,’ Lata felt.
Upon hearing her views, like any good hubby Deepak supported his wife: ‘If Hindu dharma has to survive then someone has to take responsibility and create awareness about Hindu culture and my wife is doing the right thing.’ ‘What’s wrong with what my wife said?’ Deepak charged, ‘In the past, rape cases were less because they (women) adhered by Hindu dharma and now such cases are on the rise because of western style of living.’ Of course, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and we can assume that played a bit on Deepak’s views but still a little logic wouldn’t be too amiss.
Previous Idiots of the Week
‘What’s wrong with what my wife said?’ Deepak charged, ‘In the past, rape cases were less because they (women) adhered by Hindu dharma and now such cases are on the rise because of western style of living.’ His statement that took the cake however was: ‘She has lived her entire life wearing kumkum and sarees. She was never a victim of eve-teasing. That is what she must have explained to people.’ Incidentally, idiocy runs in the family. His brother, another MP had earlier demanded a ban on bikinis on Goa’s beaches!
