“I am blessed today. I will walk the path of my guru (Basaveshwara). Nobody opposed my decision and choice. The members of the Mutt and my friends helped me. They’ve put the sacred thread and given me the responsibility. They’ve given me the ‘Ishta-linga’ and this honour. I have done the ‘Ishta-linga dharan’. Love and sacrifice is the message given to me…that is what I want to propagate,” Shareif said.
Both Diwan’s parents, Rahimansab and Fatima Koraneshwa, were firm devotees of Basaveshwara, the 12th century Lingayat saint and dedicated years of their life in the devotion of the saint.
As per a News 18 report, Shareif has been learning the principles of Lingayat religion and Basava’s teachings for the past three years and also took ‘deeksha’ last year in November.
Diwan said that he enjoys the support of all Astuti villagers as well as other people who believe in Basava’s teachings. Excited about his new role, Shareif said he hopes to keep working for the welfare of people and preach about love.
