India Population: India is world’s most populous country followed by China as four Asian countries rank among the top four in the list of 10 most populous countries in the world, a new report has revealed. As per the latest report released by the US Census Bureau, the total global population has breached eight billion, marking an important milestone in demographic history and human development.

Who are the world’s most populous countries?

According to the report, India, which has a population of 1.42 billion, is currently the most populous country on the planet, followed by China at 1.40 billion, the United States (342 million), Indonesia (283 million), and Pakistan (257 million). India is expected to witness a population decline by around 2050, with the United Nations estimating the country’s population to settle at about 1.51 billion by end of the century.

The report noted that India’s giant population is the result of rapid birth rates, surging economy, and other similar factors over the past few decades.

As per the report, China, which is witnessing a population decline over the past few years, will continue to remain the world’s second-most populous country for the foreseeable future.

What is the total world population?

The report revealed that the total world population has crossed 8 billion as of July 1, 2025, noting that a contrast has been witnessed in population growth in different parts of the world, with some witnessing a decline, while others seeing a surge in their population numbers.

According to the UN, global population has increased from seven billion to eight billion in just 12 years, and it is estimated that the number will reach 8.2 billion by 2025, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 10.3 billion in the 2080s. The UN estimates project a slower population growth rate over the coming decades, while at present, one in four people live in a country where the population is at its peak.
