Sonu Nigam deleted his Twitter account today after coming out in support of fellow singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya whose Twitter profile was suspended yesterday over some controversial tweets that he target at former JNU Vice-President Shehla Rashid. Twitter India has been receiving a lot of flak from some sections of Twitter users who think that suspending a Twitter account just because a celebrity has propounded their opinion and views is not right when there are millions of twitter handles that espouse hatred, sedition and personal threats every day. In a series of 24 tweets Sonu Nigam who was recently embroiled in an unnecessary controversy when he objected to the use of loudspeakers for azaan in the early hours of the morning explained why he is quitting Twitter. He said that he does not belong a place that spews so much venom with relish. Playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya who has time and again raked controversy with some tweet of his was finally suspended yesterday. However, today he is back on the social media platform as @abhijetsinger and is showing support for Sonu Nigam and Paresh Rawal.
The bio of the Twitter account that has been created in Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s name reads, “Official account of The Playback Singer ABHIJEET BHATTACHARYA. My account @AbhijeetSinger is suspended by Twitter. http://singerabhijeet.com “ but there is no official verification from Twitter that this account indeed is that of the playback singer. However, the account has started a hashtag #IStandWithAbhijeet and thanked his fans and followers for supporting him and even said that Twitter will regret their decision. The account is trying to muster strength against the suspension of Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s verified Twitter account. It is yet to be verified that the newly created account is indeed that of singer Abhijeet or not. Since the authentication of a profile on Twitter is denoted by the blue tick against the handle name it remains to be seen whether Twitter actually verifies this handle since they recently blocked him on their social media platform.
