A team of geologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a giant tree in Barmasiya village of Pakur district in Jharkhand, that may date back 100-145 million years, making it one of the oldest petrified fossils ever discovered in India.
Jharkhand treasure: Scientists have unearthed a unique ancient ‘treasure’ in Jharkhand which is reportedly around 145 millions years (14.5 crore) years old. A team of geologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a giant tree in Barmasiya village of Pakur district in Jharkhand, that may date back 100-145 million years, making it one of the oldest petrified fossils ever discovered in India.
Dr. Ranjit Kumar Singh, a veteran geologist who led the team, said more research is required to determine the exact age of the fossil and its environmental context. Singh stressed that the discovery was significant for the scientific community as well as the locals as it may shed light on the region ancient natural heritage, and will be immensely helpful in uncovering the earth’s biological history.
The scientist also urged the authorities to to preserve the area so future generations could study the region’s ancient heritage in more detail.
Forest Ranger Ramchandra Paswan, who accompanied the team of geologists also appealed the local community to cooperate with authorities in protecting the region, and avoid any illegal activities that may harm this ancient site. Paswan asserted that the discovery could bring the region on the map and promote tourism, which would greatly benefit the local economy.

Following the groundbreaking discovery, geologists and other scientists have planned to conduct a detailed survey of the entire region in an effort to uncover more information about its geological and biological history.
According to Dr Singh, Pakur district has vast reserves of petrified fossils waiting to be unearthed, and stressed the dire need to preserve and protect the region for future scientific ventures. He said the proposal for a geo-heritage development plan is being prepared a senior official of the Jharkhand Forest Department.
Additionally, discussions were held with local villagers, administrators, forest department, ecotourism of Jharkhand state, to develop a geopark in the area, he said.
