How many of you knew that elephants eat paan? Well, there is an elephant in Madhya Pradesh that loves chewing betel leaves like humans. We know it is hard to believe but Jumbo from Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar town loves devouring paan and relishes it too. And of course, an elephant visiting a paanwala daily is not an everyday sight so Jumbo attracts a lot of people during his visits. And the pachyderm has been enjoying his paan for the past 15 years. The mahout said that he rides into the town every day on his elephant.
The elephant is quite familiar with the place and stops at several places on his way. The paan shop is his favorite from where he eats paan where the shopkeeper happily feeds the animal every day. He, in fact, makes a bundle of juicy leaves, especially for his biggest guest. Every day on his journey he stops at the shop and waits for the shopkeeper to feed him. Children and adults alike gather around the elephant with mobile phones capturing the scene. Indian elephants are listed as endangered since 1986 by The International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are only 30,711 elephants left in the country as per 2012 census. As per reports, around 100 elephants dies every year in various incidents in the wild or otherwise. Last week an elephant died after falling in a human electric trap in West Bengal. The trap was laid as elephants had been harming farms and its produce in the area.
