Veteran actor Kamal Haasan today (February 21) announced the launch of his new political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam. The name of the party roughly means Centre for People’s Justice. The announcement was made at Madurai’s Othakadai Ground. The legendary actor also unveiled the party’s symbol — six arms interlinked around a star. Prior to the announcement, the actor led a roadshow that he started from the house of late President A P J Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram and travelled through Ramanathapuram that is his hometown, before culminating in Madurai. Kamal Hassan was accompanied by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to the event. Marking his entry into politics, Haasan said, “This is a party for the people. We have a responsibility. This isn’t a one day show.” In the morning, plan to interact with students of Kalam’s school was cancelled this morning due to opposition from the government and certain Hindu groups. Haasan addressed three public meetings before his Madurai rally. Speaking at the launch of the party, Haasan explained that the 6 hands in the flag depict the 6 states. The star is the people. The party has been started with the people’s justice in the centre. “We are open to anything that will benefit the people,” says Kamal Haasan. In the meanwhile, Twitterati began cracking their own jokes at this launch. From the presence of Arvind Kejriwal to Kamal Haasan’s film roles, Twitterati indulged in light-hearted jokes on a variety of topics. And also showered wishes on the superstar for his new innings. During the yatra, Haasan also met Abdul Kalam’s elder brother at his residence. After meeting him, Haasan reportedly said, “I am not a cinema star anymore. I am the lamp of all your house. Please protect me and keep me lit.” Haasan also visited his hometown – Paramakudi, but did not address the meeting as scheduled. It might be recalled that while announcing his political tour last month, the actor had said he too shared the vision of Mr Kalam who dreamt of a “good Tamil Nadu”. Therefore, launching his tour from the residence of Mr Kalam was Haasan’s way of moving one step closer towards that goal.
