TV star and model Kendall Jenner handing a can of coke to a police officer in a Pepsi advertisement have caused social outrage. In the ad, Kendall who is posing for cameras for a photo shoot leaves it in between to join a protest which has placards reading “love” and “join the conversation”. The ad was accused of trying to sell soda by equating it to the recent Black Lives Matter movement. The model is being criticised for subduing the issue to nothing. The officer takes a sip from the can and cracks a smile leaving the crowd in cheers. Twitter has been filled with various interpretations of the ad. Some compared to the picture of Ieshia Evans who was taken into police custody during the #BlackLivesMatter protest in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2016. The Baton Rouge protest was held following the shooting death of Alton Sterling at the hands of police.
Pepsi reacting to the criticisms in an official statement said, “This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony. We think that’s an important message to convey.” Kendall has not yet reacted to it. In 1971, Coca-Cola made a similar advert based on the Vietnam War which was heavily criticised.
