In the latest initiative to make things less miserable for transgenders, Kolkata’s Bansdroni area has washrooms with separate sections for transgender. The washroom has three signs – ladies, gents, and Tirdhara, for transgenders along with its universally accepted symbol. There are around four to five public toilets created which also has specific space for transgender people. The initiative is spearheaded by a 21-year-old Sobhan Mukherjee who actively addresses LGBTQI issues in college. Sobhan who graduated this year keenly follows LBGTQI issues and realised that unavailability of separate toilets in the area for transgenders. He then understood it as a major issue and decided to find a solution.
Mukherjee proposed the idea to ward councillor Anita Kar Majumdar who readily agreed. Talking about Mukherjee’s effort, Kar Majumdar told The Times of India, “Hats off to him for coming up with such socially responsible ideas, which none of us even think of. So far, no one has created a problem for earmarking toilets for the third gender. The step by Mukherjee has been lauded by the members of the LGBTQI community in the city. TOI quoted transgender activist Ranjita Sinha as saying, “Sobhan is not even an activist, so when he broached the topic, I wondered how serious he was. But I was amazed by his initiative, and the fact that he even coined a perfect word for the community.” Talking about his initiative, Mukherjee said, “I wanted to contribute in my small way towards making life easier for the community. I am thankful for the councillor, who understood the issue.” While in April, the Union sanitation ministry had issued a guideline to let transgenders use washrooms of their own gender choice, reality is different. There have been multiple cases of harassment towards transgenders from various parts of the country.
