The teachings and stories of Lord Mahavir hold a lot of significance in the Jain religious history. Every year, Mahavir Jayanti or Mahavir Janma Kalyanak falls in the month of Chaitra. Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of the great philosopher, Mahavir. It is said that Mahavir Swami hails from the Ikshvaku dynasty. He was born in the year 599 BCE to King Siddhartha of Kundagrama and Queen Trishala. Lord Mahavir created the five-fold path of non-violence (Ahimsa), non-stealing (Asteya), truth (Satya), virtue of celibacy (Brahmacharya) and non-possessiveness (Aparigraha). Jains are strict believers of vegetarianism as Mahavir’s teachings talk about minimising pain to other creatures. They eat fresh meals and the way of eating is known as ‘Satvik’ diet. Jains stay away from two root vegetables, onions and garlic.
