The world is reeling under a tsunami of intolerance, prejudice, stereotype, and racism, so much so that we often hear horrific and shocking news of people being discriminated against and brutalities and cruelties being committed in the name of religion and these prejudices. In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old student in the UK was asked to remove her hijab by a security guard or leave at a McDonald’s outlet in London. The issue came to fore when a viral video of the incident started doing the rounds of social media and the fast food giant had to issue an apology about the security guard’s behavior. The girl was so miffed by the incident that she has vowed never to enter the fast-food chain ever again. The incident took place at the McDonald’s outlet located on Seven Sister’s Road in Holloway, London. McDonald’s had to issue a public apology after the video of the security guard asking the young woman to remove her hijab went viral. The girl who was accompanied by friends was appalled at the treatment meted out to her. The security guard kept pestering her to remove her hijab and finally she decided to film the entire incident. The girl asks in the video why she can’t stand in the line, to which the man replies that she just have to take the hijab off. The girl replies, “It’s not just a matter of taking it off. McDonald’s receiving severe backlash and flak issued a public apology and wrote on Twitter, “We don’t have a policy which restricts/ prevents anyone wearing hijab or any other religious dress from coming to restaurants. We welcome customers of all faiths & apologise to the customer as this situation shouldn’t have taken place.” However, the deed was done and it really brought negative publicity to the restaurant by the security guard’s discriminatory act.
