“The groom and his family were badly drunk. The groom was unable to stand and was constantly falling to the ground. I have given a dowry worth lakhs but the groom wanted one lakh rupees in cash and a car. He made these demands in front of the villagers,” the mother of the bride told ANI. Meanwhile, the groom has been taken into custody on the complaint of bride’s family and further investigation is underway.
In recent times, similar cases of brides taking a stand and refusing to marry drunk, unruly grooms have come to the fore.
A few months back in November, the bride-to-be refused to marry the drunk groom because he broke into a ‘naagin dance’ before the wedding. Same was the case of a 20-year-old tribal woman in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, who refused to marry her groom at the mandap as he came in a drunken state to the wedding.
A woman in Bihar’s Chhapra, also refused to marry the groom after he was completely sloshed and misbehaved on the stage.
