The mega-merger between JioCinema and Hotstar is nearly complete, with the announcement expected soon. This significant deal between Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance and Disney is poised to reshape India’s OTT landscape. However, the logical choice of domain for the new platform—JioHotstar.com—is not currently available for Reliance. Instead, it’s already owned by a mysterious individual.
Recently, a cryptic message appeared on the website, indicating that Mukesh Ambani’s company would need to pay over Rs 1 crore to secure this unique domain. Notably, the domain JioHotstar.com is currently held by an anonymous app developer based in Delhi.
This scene takes a dramatic turn when the anonymous man claims he wants a whopping £93,345 or Rs 1,01,72,598 for study. The anonymous owner of the domain claimed that he wants the money to pursue an executive MBA course at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
News outlet IndiaToday interviewed the man, who revealed very few details about himself. During the interview, he said that he is a 28-year-old middle-class who born and brought up in the national capital. He revealed that his father is a government employee and his mother is a homemaker. He has a startup that deals in film recommendation algorithms.
On being asked about his desire to pursue an executive MBA course at Cambridge University and does he belongs to a computer field, the mystery man stated that he is an entrepreneur who is into technology. He revealed that he completed his bachelors degree in IT and then earned his master’s degree in psychology.
He said he combined both of his skills to develop an algorithm that recommended movies based on user’s personality. Due to financial constraints the plan didn’t work out but it helped the man to get selected at Cambridge University for a short program in 2021.
On being asked how hopeful is he that Reliance will pay Rs 1 crore for the domain?
He stated that he knows the fact that he is standing in the way of the corporate giant and they will probably acquire the domain which he bought last year without paying him. The mystery man said that the battle was hard but he hoped that he could win as when he bought the domain the news of the merger was not there.
You registered this domain in September 2023, before the merger was announced. How did you anticipate this? Do you closely follow business news?
Responding to a question that how did her anticipated the merger, the man stated that he followed business news very closely and that buying the domain was a combination of luck and some foresight. After noticing a buzz around a JioCinema and Hotstar merger, he bought the domain for less than Rs 5,000.
He said before publishing the letter on the website he tried contacting Reliance several times but dint get any response. But when the company registered domain JioHotstar.in, he thought he will get their response. After waiting for months he decided to go public.
