It’s difficult to pursue dreams when you continuously face setbacks. However, it’s not the case with Gujarat’s Ganesh Baraiya. He had the spark to study medicine and work as a doctor, for which he fought against the system and the council. He has a 72 per cent locomotive disability, but his resilience stands as an inspiration for multiple people who are denied basic rights due to a disability.
Ganesh Baraiya hails from Gujarat and suffers from dwarfism. He’s 3 feet tall and weighs less than 20 kilograms. He also suffers from a 72 per cent locomotive disability. Due to his disability, he was denied admission by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2018 for the MBBS degree.
Ganesh Baraiya could choose to sit with lost hopes. However, he chose to stand against the system. The fight of Ganesh began when he stood against the decision of the Medical Council of India (MCI) for denying him admission to the MBBS programme in the year 2028. He went to the Gujarat High Court for getting justice, but the court unfortunately backed up the council’s decision. Ganesh was helped by his school principal, Dr Dalpatbhai Katariya, at this time for legal finances.
He took his plea to the Supreme Court of India while simultaneously taking admission in the BSc degree. After almost four months, he was given justice when the top court gave the judgement in Ganesh’s favour. The court stated that the MCI could not deny him admission for being 3 feet tall.
In an interview with ANI, Ganesh Baraiya said, “My primary education was from my village. I took the NEET UG exam in 2018, but at that time, the Medical Council of India (MCI) rejected me due to my disability. At that time I was very dejected. We lost the case in the Gujarat High Court, but we filed the case in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that no one can stop you because of your disability, and a seat will be reserved for you in 2019.”
