A senior IPS officer has sparked controversy by alleging that someone tried to kill her after she exposed irregularities in police recruitment. Her claims have raised concerns about whether even high-ranking officers responsible for public safety can be targeted in such a manner. Kalpana Nayak, an IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, is currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police and is also a member of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB). She revealed serious flaws in the police recruitment process and later claimed that her life was in danger because of it.
In a written complaint to Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal, Nayak stated that a fire broke out in her office on July 29, 2024, after she exposed irregularities in recruitment, particularly regarding the implementation of communal reservations. She believes the fire was an attempt on her life.
Nayak said she was informed about the fire and, upon reaching her office, found her entire chamber destroyed, including her burnt chair. The Fire and Rescue Services attributed the incident to an electrical short circuit in the air conditioning system. However, Nayak insisted that if she had been present at the time, she might not have survived.
She claimed the fire occurred soon after she highlighted major issues in the TNUSRB’s implementation of communal reservations in recruitment of sub-inspectors, constables, prison warders, and firemen. . Her allegations have caused a stir in administrative circles, prompting discussions on the safety of officers who expose wrongdoing.
Speaking to India Today, she said she filed two complaints. “One complaint was to look into the fallacies I had pointed out and the other one was about the fire. My entire office and the ante-room was completely gutted. As this happened after I exposed the irregularities, I felt that I was the target,” she said.
Kalpana Nayak hails from Andhra Pradesh. As per the official IPS records on ips.gov.in, she was born on May 8, 1974. She pursued higher education at BITS Pilani and IIT Madras, earning an M.Tech degree before preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Exam.
She cleared the UPSC exam in 1997 and joined the Indian Police Service (IPS). After completing her training, she was officially inducted as an IPS officer in the Tamil Nadu cadre on December 28, 1998.
Kalpana Nayak’s father also served in the police force and retired as an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) after being posted in various locations.
On January 1, 2023, she was appointed as the ADGP for Crimes Against Women and Children in Chennai. Later, she was transferred to the Police Recruitment Board, where she uncovered irregularities in the recruitment process. Following her revelations, a fire broke out in her office, raising suspicions about an attempt on her life.
