Raelin Scurry is one lucky woman. She delivered her own baby at 29 weeks with his amniotic sac still intact. Her baby was born eight weeks premature. Raelin Scurry from Pittsburgh shared the image of her baby still covered in his amniotic sac on her Instagram page. This rare moment occurs in fewer than 80,000 births. The phenomenon is called en caul and means that the amniotic sac in which he was developing inside the womb did not break and he was delivered with it. Raelin Scurry shared her story on Instagram which has steadily gone viral. Raelin Scurry started feeling pain and contractions which she thought were Braxton Hicks contractions and ignored them thinking they are just normal. However, when her contractions started increasing in intensity she decided that it was time for a medical emergency. She delivered in the car before reaching the hospital.
Raelin Scurry couldn’t make it to the hospital in time and gave birth en route when she started feeling the contractions harder and more painful. The baby was born with the amniotic sac. Usually, when women go into labour, the amniotic sac breaks and the liquid drains out which is called water breaking. When Raelin Scurry’s son was born it was originally still, causing her to panic but when she rubbed his face with her thumb “he pulled his little hands and feet up to his face” to “reassure us he was okay”. Being born ‘en caul’ is the term that is used to describe babies born within an intact amniotic sac. ‘Caul’ literally means ‘helmeted head’ or ‘veil’ as the baby’s face is not visible. Raelin Scurry’s birth story has become viral on social media and people are congratulating the happy couple. According to medieval times babies born with caul are noted as possessing gifts of clairvoyance and other supernatural abilities.
