The American space agency NASA has issued a warning about a massive asteroid, 2014 TN17, which is approaching our planet. The asteroid, measuring 165 meters in width—twice the size of the Taj Mahal—is heading toward Earth at a high speed of 77,282 km/hour. Although the asteroid will pass Earth from a safe distance, NASA has classified it as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid due to its size and trajectory.
As per the NASA researchers, who are keeping an eye on the space rock, it is coming towards our planet at an astonishing speed of 77, 282 km/h. NASA is closely monitoring Asteroid 2014 TN17 due to its size and tremendous speed as these kinds of space rocks are considered threats due to their size and proximity to the Earth.
Experts have confirmed that asteroid 2014 TN17 will not collide with Earth, but it serves as a reminder of the possible threats present in space. The asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth on March 26, 2025, at 5:04 pm IST, passing at a safe distance of approximately 5 million kilometers. This distance is 13 times greater than that between Earth and the Moon.
Despite being at a safe distance, its designation as a hazardous asteroid prompts scientists to monitor it closely. The orbits of Apollo asteroids like 2014 TN17 intersect with Earth’s trajectory, although the majority pass without any issues.
NASA’s Near-Earth Object Studies Center (CNEOS) is actively tracking asteroids. Currently, scientists indicate that there are no asteroids on a collision course with Earth; however, even minor changes in their orbits could present potential risks in the future. An asteroid measuring 540 feet in diameter could result in significant consequences, including tsunamis, earthquakes, and alterations to the atmosphere if it were to collide with our planet. This ongoing research into these celestial objects is crucial for addressing any potential threats promptly.
