New Delhi: Can you imagine a country on earth where jails are empty? We know it may be hard for you to believe, but yes, there is a place where prisons are surprisingly vacant. Typically, jails around the world are home to criminals and troublemakers, who serve their sentences behind bars. In a world where crimes are rapidly increasing, this European country in 2018 had decided to shut their prisons as a result of dropping the crime rates.

The Netherlands has no criminals to put in jail. In 2013, the country had 19 prisoners only, and in 2018, it had no criminals. According to a report by Telegraph UK published in 2016, the Dutch Ministry of Justice suggested that overall crime will drop by 0.9 percent a year in the next five years.

It is important to note that shutting down prisons could result in approximately 2,000 people losing their jobs, with only 700 of them being reassigned to other government positions. However, in 2018, while making the decision was seen as a great achievement for the country as a whole—reflecting achievements in its systems, government, and the collective responsibility of its citizens.

Electronic ankle monitoring system

An ankle monitoring system consists of a tether or ankle bracelet and is worn by defendants under house arrest or inmates in certain prisons. This device transmits a radio frequency signal that reveals the wearer’s location. If the individual moves beyond an authorized boundary, the authorities are immediately alerted.
