World's most expensive party lasted for almost three days. There were several guests from all over the world.
The idea of a celebration is subjective. For some it is a relaxing day with loved ones, for some it is a revelry of food, fun and frolic. Do you know that one of the most expensive parties in the world went on for almost three days? No, it was not Mukesh Ambani, or Elon Musk or Lakshmi Mittal. The party was organised almost five decades ago by an Iranian ruler.
A celebration of 2500 years of the Empire of Iran was held in a desert. Consecrated at Persepolis, the party was organised by the then ‘Shah of Iran’ Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Under his rule Iran was a completely different landscape that underwent several contemporary advances. It was an Iran that was moving towards of Western culture, did away with religious practice of hijab, and adopted several liberal’ policies agonising several Iranians.
The celebration was etched in history as a party to remember.
25000 Bottles of Wine, Imported Birds And More
Reportedly, the area of Persepolis was cleared of snakes and vermin for the grand gala. An elaborate tent city was planned where international guests from as many as 65 countries were flown in. If reports are to be believed, there were about 25000 bottles of wine, 18 tonnes of foods, 180 waiters and it felt that wealth was flowing like a river. Several media reports mentioned that about 50,000 birds were exported from Europe. Approximately 40 trucks, about 100 planes and contingent of security was established for catering the needs of one of the greatest parties in the history.

However, this party added fuel to the fire of already growing resentment. The contrast between the rich and poor deepened and the opposition grew stronger with the opulent display of wealth .

After the elite, political figures, royalty attended the this party, the anger grew and Shah was toppled by the opposition. The face of Iran was changed completely after the 1979 revolution. This point in time marked the culmination of monarchy with last monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and established the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Republic.
Media reports suggest that the part probably amounted to over 100 million dollars. In pop culture today, a documentary by the title ‘Decadence and Downfall: The Shah of Iran’s Ultimate Party’ was released in 2016 directed by Hassan Amini.
