According to the guidelines, tiger urine should be mixed with white wine and pieces of ginger before applying it to the affected area. This is supposed to reduce pain and cure the illness.
If you fall sick, the obvious choice is to take medicine or visit a doctor. But in China, an unusual remedy is making headlines—tiger urine! Yes, tiger urine is being promoted as a treatment for ailments, and what’s even more surprising is its hefty price tag. A single bottle of this so-called medicinal liquid costs around 600 rupees. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a wildlife zoo in Sichuan province, China, has been selling bottles of Siberian tiger urine, claiming it helps treat arthritis, muscle pain, and sprains. Tourists visiting the Ya’an Bifengxia Wildlife Zoo can purchase a 250-gram bottle for 50 yuan.
The zoo has even provided instructions on how to use it—mixing it with white wine and ginger before applying it to the affected area. They also suggest it can be consumed, though people with allergies are advised against drinking it. This unusual treatment has sparked curiosity and controversy worldwide.

A staff member at the zoo explained that tiger urine is collected in a basin after the tiger goes to the bathroom. However, it’s unclear if the urine is cleaned before it’s sold. The staff member also mentioned that the sales are very low, with only two bottles sold per day. In 2014, the zoo even gave tiger urine as a prize to celebrity contestants on a reality TV show.

The sale of tiger urine as a medicine has caused a lot of debate in China. Many doctors strongly disagree with it. A pharmacist from Hubei Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital said there is no proof that tiger urine has any health benefits. He also mentioned that using unproven treatments like this could harm both the reputation of traditional Chinese medicine and efforts to protect tigers. Despite this, the zoo staff claims they have a legal license to sell tiger urine.
