Padma Awards is one of the highest civilian Awards of the country that are conferred to people who excel in their respective field. The awards are categorised into three, namely Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Padma Awards are conferred on recommendations made by the Awards Committee. The list of names is then submitted to the Prime Minister and the President for their approval. No award is conferred except on the recommendation of the Awards Committee.
1.The Awards are given to people in various fields of activities including social work, public affairs, science and engineering, media, literature, education, art, industry, sports, civil service etc.
2. While ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for distinguished service in a particular field; ‘Padma Bhushan’ is given for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
3. The Padma awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
4. The Padma Awards were instituted in the year 1954. Other than interruptions during the years of 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997, these awards were given every year on Republic Day. 5. Padma awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The ceremony is generally held in the month of March/April.
6. The President of India Pranab Mukherjee has this year approved conferment of Padma Awards to 89 persons. The award includes 7 Padma Vibhushan, 7 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri Awardees. Of which 19 of the awardees are women, the list also includes 5 NRIs, PIOs and 6 Posthumous awardees.
7. Only after a period of at least five years since conferment of the earlier Padma award can be the Padma award be conferred on a person again.
