Pakistan and China joins hands to carry Pak's rover to..., can it challenge India's Chandrayaan mission?

Pakistan has released an official statement announcing its mission to send a rover to the Moon’s south pole. The country’s space agency, Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), has developed this rover. The statement confirmed that SUPARCO’s rover would be sent to the Moon’s south pole. Pakistan has partnered with China’s space agency to send the rover to the Moon. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between SUPARCO and the China National Space Administration (CNSA). The agreement was officially signed on February 5, 2025, in the presence of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and China’s President Xi Jinping.

According to Pakistani media reports, under this agreement, Pakistan’s first indigenously developed lunar rover will be a part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2028. This means Pakistan will not send its rover to the Moon independently—instead, China will transport it there.

What is China’s Chang’e-8 mission?

China’s space agency, CNSA (China National Space Administration), has designed the Chang’e-8 mission with the goal of conducting on-site scientific research, verifying new space technologies, and mapping the lunar surface.

Pakistan’s participation in this mission is considered a major milestone for the country’s space program and its contribution to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) initiative. Although Pakistan established its space agency (SUPARCO) before India, it has not yet achieved any significant milestones in space exploration.

Pakistan’s role in Chang’e-8 mission

Pakistan’s SUPARCO lunar rover will be deployed at the Moon’s south pole, an area known for its unique environment. Several future space missions are also planned to focus on this region.

According to reports, SUPARCO scientists have developed an advanced payload that will be sent to the Moon via the rover. Additionally, the mission will carry a scientific payload designed through international collaboration between Chinese and European scientists.

Pakistani scientists worked closely with Chinese experts to develop the rover, which will conduct an in-depth analysis of the Moon’s surface.

How big is the achievement for Pakistan?

If the mission is successful, Pakistani scientists will be able to study the Moon’s surface directly from Earth. Through this mission, Pakistan can analyze the composition of lunar soil and explore its potential for resource utilization. Additionally, it will help Pakistan plan future space missions, map the Moon’s surface, and study the impact of future explorations and human presence. Scientists will also examine emission levels and plasma properties on the Moon’s surface.

The collaboration between SUPARCO and China’s space agency CNSA highlights the strong bilateral ties between Pakistan and China and their shared interest in deep space exploration. However, this mission cannot be considered entirely Pakistan’s achievement, as China is playing a major role.
