One of the biggest and the ongoing quest of humans are of retaining youth. Our FMCG market is flooded with cosmetics and creams that reverse the process of aging. The elusive quest of the Elixir of Youth is not only a part of folklore but of reality as well where scientists and companies spends millions of dollars in the research of a substance or a drug that will keep us humans younger for a longer time and probably help us retain our youths for a substantial period of time. We have had umpteen numbers of fictions and stories related to Vampires and immortals who feast on young or drink blood to retain their youth. The story of Rapunzel is based on such a premise of eternal youth and so was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone where Elixir of Life or Philosopher’s Stone was featured. However, till now the question of doing this in some unethical way never posed a question. But now, a company named Ambrosia LLC has developed a new technique called Parabiosis through which they transfuse the blood of teenagers in old people to reverse the symptoms of aging.

Ambrosia LLC, is a California based company which made headlines in 2016 when the investment firm of techno-libertarian Peter Thiel had expressed interest in its efforts. He spoke at the 2017 annual Code Conference on the studies of blood being conducted by Ambrosia. He said, “Life-extension science is a popular obsession in Silicon Valley, so we’re starting to see startups like Jesse Karmazin’s Ambrosia, which studies blood and its constituent parts, and offers treatments that propose to reverse aging—transfusions as a service.” Jesse Karmazin offered the research of his company and has already got over 100 customers signed up to receive plasma transfusions, for a bargain price of $8,000.

The plasma used in the procedure is mostly pulled by teenagers with a donor age cap of 25 years, ensuring that only fresh blood is used (like you would use fresh produce in a dish). The customers have to be over the age of 35. Something similar was depicted in an episode of HBO’s Silicon Valley in which the character Gavin Belson takes a meeting while receiving a blood transfusion from a blood boy (the episode was also called “The Blood Boy).

The procedure is called Parabiosis and is a little-studied field. Parabiosis has been studied in mice and a few human trials; it explores the possibility that young blood can reverse the symptoms of aging when it is introduced in the circulatory system of the elderly. The procedure does not end aging but might reverse the symptoms of aging.
