The National Anthem has been a topic of discussion since the Supreme Court of India made it mandatory to air the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, at the beginning of a movie. The court came under the radar for asking the physically challenged people to remain as still as possible during the national anthem, seeming to be insensitive to the challenges of their life. The recent T20 match between India and England stirred back this debate as Kashmiri cricketer, Parvez Rasool who was playing for team India was seen chewing gum during the national anthem Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium. The off-spinner received immense criticism and bashing from social media as people were appalled by this gesture of the cricketer. The first T 20 against England marked the international debut for Rasool in the international T 20 cricket. The video which went viral was later taken down from social media on copyright grounds by the host broadcaster. However, several copies of the video are found on social media as people are sharing videos and images of the incident and demanding severe action against the cricketer. Parvez Rasool was the first cricketer to represent the valleys of Kashmir in the senior Indian cricket team in an ODI against Bangladesh. He has become a target of social media trolls who are outraged at the open disrespect shown to the Indian national anthem. The video shows Rasool standing in an at ease position and appears to be chewing gum.

Various Twitterati has expressed their disappointment on this incident and are questioning the cricketing authority in India about their stand on the incident. The most common reaction on twitter has been users question him being a part of the Indian cricket team.

“Dear @BCCI , If Parvez Rasool can’t sing India’s national anthem, chews gum while it’s being played, why should he wear India’s jersey?” has become a trend as various users are questioning the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) is being questioned on the incident.

Other twitter users have expressed their disappointment over the incident in a Tweet that read, “DISAPPOINTED to see Parvez Rasool standing at ease & chewing gum during national anthem. Can wear India jersey, can’t sing anthem? #INDvENG”.

Parvez Rasool made his debut in international T20 in this match and  he dismissed Eoin Morgan and got his first T20 International wicket. He was awarded with Lala Amarnath award for best all-rounder in domestic circuit after his performance in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season. Rasool is a shining star in the Indian Premier League and debuted in 2013 as a part of Pune Warriors. He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the 2014 IPL auction for Rs 95 lakh.
