If you are one of those who forwarded Amma’s ‘secret daughter’ picture on WhatsApp, this news is for you. An image claiming to be that of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s daughter went viral on the social media and WhatsApp. The lady in the photograph is Divya Ramanathan Veeraraghavan, and she is not Jayalalithaa’s daughter! After the death of Jayalalithaa on December 5, several Facebook posts and WhatsApp forwards claimed how former AIDMK chief’s ‘daughter’ was living in the United States, in anonymity. The woman in the viral pictures – in bright green saree – shared striking similarity with the Jayalalithaa which was enough for ‘naive’ users to believe the story. These rumours were quashed after Indian playback singer Chinmayi Sripaada posted about the real identity of the person in the picture. The death of J Jayalalithaa came as a rude shock to the country. The 68-year-old died after having a cardiac arrest in Chennai’s Apollo Hospital where she was admitted on September 22. Being an eminent political figure, her health condition and eventually her death gave rise to numerous conspiracy theories. One such baseless rumour spread by gossip mongers was that of Jayalalithaa’s secret daughter. ALSO READ: Jayalalithaa and MGR love story goes viral: 6 things to know about it! The message talked about a certain daughter of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister living in the United States away from her mother’s stardom. Jayalalithaa who was never married and whose personal life has been highly guarded, this piece of information raised quite an eyebrow. Till recently, it was clarified by Chinamayi Sripaada on her Facebook account. The 32-year-old Carnatic singer in her post wrote, “Please, please stop sharing ridiculous ‘news stories’ created clearly as a figment of the imagination of an unstable mind.” Chinamayi informed, ‘No, she is not Jayalalithaa’s daughter. She lives in Australia with her husband, far away from the heat and dust of TN politics.’ About the other picture of Divya accompanied by her husband, Chinmayi wrote ‘the couple in the photograph are known to my family and they belong to an illustrious family of classical musicians.’ Providing more information, she wrote, “She belongs to the family of renowned Mridangam Vidwan V Balaji. When he is not busy with concerts he is a part of the web series called ‘Husbanned’.”
After Chinamayi’s post, the lady in the picture, Divya’s brother-in-law took to Facebook to clarify further on the rumours. He wrote, ‘Clarification regarding my sister in law being portrayed as the daughter of former Chief Minister Selvi J.Jayalalitha which has been in circulation for a while in social media. The person in this picture is my sister in law and we know her since her childhood, and this has been annoying us for a while.’
In 2014 when Jayalalithaa was jailed, Divya and her husband received several messages with this picture. They thought like any new trend on Internet; this would also die down. But after the death of Jayalalithaa, the matter only worsened for the pair. Chinmayi in her post hinted towards a very powerful thought – “repeat a lie long enough and it becomes ‘truth’.” Well, high time we give a minute of thought before sharing anything ‘unusual’, ‘curious’ and ‘sensational’ news forwarded on messaging apps!
