Is India participating in Winter Olympics 2018?

Shiva Keshavan will compete in his sixth and final Winter Olympics in Luge whereas Jagdish Singh will be seen competing in cross-country skiing event. Shiva Keshavan has been the flag-bearer of India in the Winter Sports but he has faced trouble to find consistent support from sponsors. He would be competing in the Luge on February 10, 2018. On the other hand, Jagdish Singh had a delayed arrival to PyeongChang as the Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) nominated Jodh Singh Dhillon and Roshan Lal Thakur instead of his coach Major General Atul Kaushil to accompany him. However, both the nominations were rejected and Jagdish Singh finally reached the South Korean city with former cross-country skier Nadeem Iqbal, who took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang was mired in controversy because of North Korea’s regular nuclear tests in retaliation to the American threats. However, it was a pleasant surprise when in January 2018, North and South Korea decided to march together in the Opening Ceremony and present a unified women’s ice hockey team. At the opening ceremony, North Korea was represented by Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam, the country’s 90-year-old nominal head of state, South Korea was represented by President Moon Jae-in and the United States Vice President Mike Pence was also present. The Winter Olympics go on till February 25, 2018, until the closing ceremony when the torch will be officially passed to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
