Rabindranath Tagore a.k.a. Thakur was born on May 7, 1861 in Calcutta. He reshaped literature and music to a great extent. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1913. Tagore is our William Shakespeare closer home! He founded Shanti Niketan, which was later renamed Visva-Bharati University. It grew to become one of India’s most renowned places of higher learning.
Some of Tagore’s writings were highly implacable and his poems projected the love for his homeland. He was also knighted in 1915 but he renounced his knighthood in 1919 in response to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
His poem Where the mind is without fear is nothing but a plea for India’a independence. So as to be free, only a fearless spirit can hold his head high, so the poet wishes to be awakened to a state of mind without fear.
