Republic Day 2017: How to legally dispose of soiled or torn national flag

According to the Flag Code of India, 2002, there are two ways of disposing of the national flag, either by burning it or burying it.

The 68th Republic Day will be celebrated across India on January 26, 2017. Indians will once again be overtaken by a feeling of extreme patriotism and flaunt the national flag in every way possible. Once the flag hoisting event is done, these flags are often found on the ground in a tattered state or thrown into the bin. The main reason for this set of rules was the disrespecting way in which flags were initially disposed of. The proper way of burning an Indian National Flag is by starting a fire and respectfully placing folded flags in the fire. If the flags are directly burned without folding them or lit by its end, it is considered to be a legal offence. The easier way of disposing of the large amount of flags that are used in every group gathering on the national holidays is by burning them. To bury the flags, we need a wooden box in which all the flags need to be folded and placed. Once these flags are collected in the box, it needs to be buried. It is important to note that the burial of the flag needs to be in a quiet environment and people need to avoid from making jokes or laughing during this event. The Indian national flag is a symbol of justice, liberty and loyalty and is a representation of the sacrifices made by the soldiers.
