The Himalayan glacier above Gangotri is receding at a very worrying rate. It has retreated about one kilometre in the past 20 years or so. If the Gangotri glacier melts then the Ganga (Ganges river) will be no more a holy water body. It will be in a devastating state. India’s holiest river is in trouble, as global warming is making the glaciers melt and is threatening its survival as well as ours. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “Glaciers in the Himayalas are receding faster than in any other part of the world and if the present rate continues, the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high if the earth keep getting warmer at the current rate.”
