Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day or Sarvodaya Day is celelbrated every year on March 23. March 23, 1931 is one of the most important and historic date in the history of Indian struggle for Independence because on this day three young and brave freedom fighters laid down their lives for the independence of India from the British rule. They were Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. Their contribution towards the Indian freedom struggle and the subsequent execution of them by the British on March 23, 1931 compelled the people of India to observe this day as Shaheed Diwas. Even after so many years of their death they are one of the most popular and well-known freedom fighter in India. Several movies have been made on their exploits in the Indian freedom struggle. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev have such an aura and impact on the psyche of Indians that even Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose pales in their comparison. Chandra Shekhar Azad was another associate of theirs but he shot himself dead after a long shootout with the British as he had vowed never to be captured alive.
Maybe it’s the fact that they were so young when they lost their lives or maybe that they jolted the British and the leaders spearheading the Indian freedom struggle from their reverie, made Rajguru, Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev the darlings of Indian populace. Even today their contributions are remembered and applauded and people still remember what they did to cause the British Government to sit up alarmed.
On March 23, this year, the death anniversary of the trio and the designated Shaheed Diwas the nation is remembering their heroic deeds and supreme sacrifice. Everyone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu to Virender Sehwag has been remembering the three martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev with great respect and reverence. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev’s contribution is such that they will never be forgotten even after eons. As Bhagat Singh rightly said, “They may kill me, but they cannot kill my ideas. They can crush my body, but they will not be able to crush my spirit.” Little did he know that his words will come true? Long live the Martyrs!
