Shashi Tharoor has done it again. He has put the British back in its place once again at a debate. Shashi Tharoor as we all know is a very good articulator and orator whose speeches are worth listening to, so obviously, when he puts a dampener on so-called British colonial rule and shatters the notion that British did a lot for our country it is a sight to behold. If you remember Akshay Kumar had a similar dialogue in the movie Namastey London where he calls out the farce that the colonial rulers spread about India and Shashi Tharoor did the same when he appeared on ABC TV’s Q&A for a panel discussion on politics and the world at large. He proved yet again why he is considered an authority on British colonialism and went all out with facts, statistics, and trivia to rip apart the British empire to shreds.
The panel discussion was going smoothly when at the end of the show an Indian-Australian man from the audience asked Shashi Tharoor if he thought that there were any positive aspects of the British rule in India and could he cite some examples. Shashi Tharoor did not need telling twice and he started ripping apart the colonial British rule and any preconceived good that the people thought about the oppressive foreign rule. He said, “The British came to one of the richest countries in the world, accounting for 27% of global GDP n the 1700s and 23% in the 1800s. Over 200 years of exploitation, depredation, loot, and destruction reduced it to a poster child for third-world poverty and just 3% of global GDP.”
Shashi Tharoor did not mince his words and we are very glad that he did not do so because it really feels nice to know that our country was much prosperous and culturally rich before the British came and reduced us to downtrodden second-class world citizens. In a 90-second monologue, he shut everyone’s mouth and ensured that there would be no dissent on the facts that he espoused and left everyone convinced that India if it had been free then it would have been a bigger, better and stronger superpower today.
