Tharoor had earlier condemned the actions of Rajput maharajas who protested against the movie saying it was an insult to their honour. Quoting from History, Tharoor had said that some Rajput maharajas had turned back under the pressure of the Britishers. Tharoor came under strong criticisms for his statements and faced backlash from certain sections of the society and polity. However, the MP has now taken to Twitter saying that he did not mean to belittle the Rajput community as a whole. While he also tweeted the same in English, Twitter couldn’t get over the Hindi version of it.

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena and some other outfits have been accusing the Bhansali of distorting history and hurting Hindu sentiments by showcasing an alleged relationship between Rajput queen Padmini and Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. The movie has been embroiled in a controversy since its shooting days. Bhansali was also hit by a protestor on the sets of Padmavati.
