In India, qualifying for the NEET and IIT-JEE exams is considered a guarantee of success. Millions of students begin preparing for the NEET and JEE exams as early as 11th or 12th grade to secure admission to the country’s prestigious medical or engineering institutions. However, the success story of Sanjay B. from Chennai demonstrates that if you are hardworking and capable, success will follow.
Sanjay’s dream was to become a doctor, but fate had other plans. He took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test ( NEET UG ) three times to pursue MBBS. All three times, he failed to secure a seat in a government college. His marks fell short of the cut-off mark required for admission to a government medical college.
Sanjay started working at the age of 18, juggling his studies and financial well-being. He worked in the banking and financial sector, from telesales to leading teams and meeting credit card sales targets. He worked at SBI Cards, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Caliber, gaining strong communication skills and sales experience.
Sanjay says that juggling studies while working a full-time job from the age of 18 wasn’t easy. This journey not only taught him how to manage under pressure, but also taught him the art of adapting to circumstances , which is very useful in his professional life.
When Sanjay enrolled in the BS program at IIT Madras, he didn’t even know how to code. It was a completely different world for him, where he had to start everything from scratch. In his LinkedIn post, Sanjay says, “A few years ago, I couldn’t get a government seat through NEET because my marks didn’t meet the cut-off. While it was disappointing at the time, it opened doors to new possibilities. Choosing a different path wasn’t easy, but it proved to be the right one for me.”
Sanjay enrolled in several courses while working a full-time job. He earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science from IIT Madras and a BA in Health Science from the University of the People. As if that weren’t enough, he is now pursuing a master ‘s degree in Financial Engineering from WorldQuant University.
It’s worth noting that IIT BS in Data Science is one of the IIT courses that doesn’t require qualifying for the JEE exam. Admission is through a qualifying process that involves online coursework and a final exam after completing 12th grade. Candidates must have math and English in 10th grade and physics and math in 12th grade.
