Almost all of these emperors tried to expand the Mughal dynasty in India and beyond, using every possible strategy. Notably, the Mughal Empire ruled most of the Indian subcontinent for about 331 years, from 1526 to 1857. There is no doubt that the Mughal dynasty was among the richest and longest-ruling in the country. At its peak, the dynasty controlled a massive part of the Indian subcontinent.

During Jahandar Shah’s reign, several events occurred that weakened the Mughal legacy. His rule lasted only a year, which was one of the shortest reigns in Mughal history.
Jahandar was notorious for his indulgence and flamboyant personality. He gave the title of Begum Imtiaz Mahal to his mistress name – Lal Kunwar, who was a courtesan.
At times, he came in court either naked or dressed in women’s clothing. His lack of leadership weakened the military power. Not only that, excessive spending on indulgence and luxury put immense pressure on the state’s treasury.
The Mughals, who were of Central Asian Muslim descent, used Persian as their official language. Their marriages with Hindu royalty and the formation of robust alliances with various communities in the subcontinent resulted in significant cultural, artistic, and linguistic interactions.
The Mughal dynasty asserted its lineage from the Mongols, with the term “Mughal” derived from the Arabized version of Mongol. The Mughal emperors were bigtime lovers of the arts in India, contributing to the creation of some of the nation’s most remarkable structures, including the palaces in Delhi, Agra, and Lahore (now in Pakistan), as well as the renowned Taj Mahal mausoleum.
