The Azaan has once again instigated debates online, this time when singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi shared her valuable thoughts on the morning azaan. The renowned Bollywood artist called the azaan an extreme imposed religiosity and termed the religious prayer as an aggressive ear shattering call. Twitter was soon full of people bashing the singer for the harsh and derogatory choice of words, and many pointed out that use of loud speakers is not really confined to one religion that is being criticised for quite some times. From calling the prayer of Muslims an ear shattering call to making accusations that the volume of azaan has increased after Sonu Nigam’s protest, the singer did it all on a fine Sunday morning. Sonu Nigam posts video of Azaan early morning! The war is not over yet – Watch video
Suchitra was soon criticised by the sensible squad online who decided to try and put some sense into the singer. However, there was no stopping to her rambling, and she continued to make glaring statements that took nasty jibes at the Islamic prayer and made various derogatory remarks on azaan. The complaint began when Suchitra tweeted out early on Sunday morning, “came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity.” Sonu Nigam quits Twitter: Are celebrity opinions creating unnecessary drama and increasing hate on social media?
When the parody account of the famous Sagarika Ghose bashed the singer’s complaints and said, “While Hindoo celebs raise voice agnst Azaan, I remind dem its good to wakeup at BrahmaMuhurt acc to Hinduism. Azaan only helps to do so.” Other twitter users also tried to instil some sense into Suchitra Karthik while a few warned her against making such hurtful statements that forced Sonu Nigam to quit twitter. However, Suchitra went on to say that azaan can be played in ‘decent hours’ but the timings and when a Twitterati pointed out at the Sonu Nigam incident, she even said that the volume of azaan had increased after Sonu Nigam’s complaints! Here is the twitter war as it happened.

i wake up at Brahmamuhurt of my own accord & do my prayers & riyaz.& yoga. I dont need public loudspeakers to remind me of my God or my duty https://t.co/7rPSzG1EfB

@suchitrak I live in an otherwise quite locality but the temple nearby has been playing songs on loud speaker thru the day. It’s OK with me. https://t.co/uEL1b0Eg8s

Why blame only one religion…are we Hindus lagging behind??

While the increased use of loudspeakers is a grave issue that is causing various health hazards, singling out azaan while temples, churches and DJs blast their chorus, bhajans and songs highlight exactly what is wrong with our country. The sound of azaan has become a topic of debate for an extremely long time, and it is high time we realised the underlying issue, instead of pointing fingers at different religious practices. Being a part of a secular country, the basic thing that we can do is make sure to avoid religious tension and maybe, just maybe, things twice before using derogatory words that may hurt others?
