Telangana launches Hy-Fi with 1000 free hotspots under ‘Hyderabad City Wi-Fi’ project

Telangana will launch another 2,000 spots in the next two months.

The Telangana government has launched the ‘Hyderabad City Wi-Fi’ project which provides wireless networking technology at over 1,000 public places in the city. The state will launch another 2,000 spots in the next two months in collaboration with Airtel, Act Fibrenet, BSNL and other partners under Hy-Fi project. The Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project would be made at an investment of Rs 300 core and made by service operators and infrastructure providers. The Telangana government had launched the pilot version of the ‘Hyderabad City Wi-Fi’ project in June 2015. The latest launched on the based on its success and the government has decided to cover over 3,000 locations across Hyderabad.

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is the technical adviser to the Telangana government on the project. Economic Times quoted Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary, IT department, Telangana as saying, “We will be adding another 2,000 wi-fi hotspots across the city in the next two months with investments from the private players. The government is also allowing the use of its own properties wherever required apart from developing a conducive policy.” Ranjan also said that the project will be also be extended to Telangana’s Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam districts.

Talking about the project he also said, “We will stabilise it first in Hyderabad and based on how it is working, we will extend it to three other districts. Under ‘Digital Telangana’ that was launched in June 2015 around 100 wi-fi hot spots had offered free service for 30 minutes at places across Hyderabad including malls, tourist spots, public offices, police stations, government schools and colleges, and others. (Image- The Indian Express)
