The ministers ate chicken on stage as sales in Indian poultry market dropped by almost 50 percent owing to the rumours spread by social media that coronavirus can be spread through chicken and eggs. The organisers of the fair said that many people are scared and are avoiding the consumption of chicken and egg due to rumours on social media. According to them, chicken consumption has come down by 30 per cent.
COVID-19, which broke out in China’s Wuhan and spread to various parts of the world has claimed more than 2800 lives so far.
Health authorities in China said that the number of confirmed cases has increased to 79,251. On Friday, 2,885 people were discharged from hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 288 to 7,664.
The WHO on Friday revised the risk assessment of the COVID-19 from ‘high’ to ‘very high’ at global level, as an increasing number of cases in more countries were reported over the last few days.
“A Pandemic is a unique situation, in which all citizens on the planet will likely be exposed to a virus within a defined period of time,” state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme as saying.
