Oscar-nominated movie, The Danish Girl which is based on the first sex change surgery in the world will not be aired in India, thanks to our friends at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The certification team at CBFC have blocked the telecast of this internationally acclaimed movie terming it as ‘unsuitable’ for the audience. The certification board refused to give the required certifications to television broadcaster, Sony Le PLEX HD. The Danish Girl was set to premiere to the Indian audience on March 26, 2017, on Sony Le PLEX HD. Let’s talk about sex, baby: Lipstick Under My Burkha and AIB video A Woman’s Besties, sexuality from a woman’s point-of-view on film!

However, the channel informed its fans that Indians would be devoid of this renowned and acclaimed movie as the CBFC blocked its broadcast by not providing the certification required. The official Twitter account of Sony Le PLEX HD broke this news with a tweet, “We know how much you wished to watch The Danish Girl this Sunday & regret the inconvenience caused. We thank you for your constant support.”

The official statement reveals that the telecast of the internationally acclaimed award winning movie, The Danish Girl was blocked by the certification board. The channel also revealed that they were trying their best to get the certification for the premiere of the movie on a future date and regretted the inconvenience caused.

The Danish Girl was the historic account of the world’s first sex reassignment surgery. The film stars Eddie Redmayne in the lead and Academy Award winning Alicia Vikanderm as the supporting actress. The Danish Girl was widely appreciated and was a prominent name at the Oscars 2016. However, these achievements and accolades had no effect on the CBFC which claimed that the movie would not be the right choice for the Indian audiences as it is not suitable to be viewed by children. After censor board mutes ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in ‘Phillauri’, Twitter has hilarious ideas to silence CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani!

The Danish Girl had managed to be released in theatres in India with zero cuts and an ‘A’ certification. However, the board ruled that the movie cannot be shown on TV as it covers a sensitive subject. The board, which has in the past allowed the telecast and repeated telecast of various questionable movies said that the movie might not be suitable for the wide range of people that can be reached through TV and hence could not pass the certification.

The CBFC has been under the scrutiny for many judgements that have been named as illogical by the majority of Indian fans. From banning the release of Award winning movie, Lipstick Under My Burkha, to muting out Hanuman Chalisa in a scene in Phillauri, the choices made by CBFC have been termed ridiculous and completely nonsensical by many. While we cannot out turn the decisions made, we sure hope that the movie is aired soon!
