Do you think sanitary pads and tampons are potentially dangerous? If you don’t think so, think twice. This 24-year-old almost lost her life after using tampons! Yes, this young model named Lauren Wasser, also aspiring Women’s National Basketball Association player lost her leg. She lost her leg to a disease named Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is caused by a bacterial infection from a retained tampon in women. Post the incident she has warned women about the potential dangers and the chances of acute septicaemia in women who use tampons or IUD.

She also legally fought with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, that makes the Kotex Natural Balance tampons and the supermarkets that supplied her with the tampons. She recently appeared in a first major campaign after losing her leg.

She is worried about the consequences of tampons being used by young girls and women. She not only wants to spread awareness about the disability but also about women’s rights with her experience. When she started using the super-plus tampons, she started feeling sick. When she misunderstood the sickness for tiredness, she took a nap, but was found on her bedroom floor days later.

Her doctor informed about the need to amputate her right leg due to the infection. Although she struggled a lot she is today a strong woman and continues to fight for transparency from companies that make tampons and fail to inform about the health hazards tampons pose for women.
