Time magazine has honored Ian Grillot, the US citizen who took bullets for Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla during the racially motivated Kansas shooting earlier this year. His name features in the magazine’s “5 Heroes Who Gave Us Hope 2017”. Grillot was severely injured when he tried to intervene in the shooting by a Navy veteran who was targeting Indians at a bar in Olathe, Kansas. Srinivas was killed in the shootout and his colleague Alok Madasani was injured. “I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if I didn’t do anything,” Grillot said in an article posted by Time Magazine.
The magazine saluted him as the “bargoer who stepped into the line of fire.” “Without all the prayers and positive support from everybody, I wouldn’t be doing as well as I am right now. It has been a wonderful year and a blessing to be alive,” Ian told PTI. Grillot was having a gala time in the restaurant when the gunman approached Sirnivas and Alok and told them to “get out of my country”. Ian intervened to keep the shooter from harming others and was shot in the chest by the assailant. Earlier this year, Ian was also felicitated with a check of USD 100,000 by Indian Americans in Houston and was honored as “A True American Hero”.
