1. Vatican City

With an area of 49 hectares, Vatican City is known for being the smallest country in the world. With a population of 764 as of 2023, it is one of the world’s smallest independent state in terms of both size and population. Despite being the world’s smallest country, the Vatican holds immense importance as it’s home to the Pope. The country became independent from Italy in 1929 and it contains religious and cultural sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Apostolic Library, and the Vatican Museums.

2. Monaco

Monaco is the second smallest country in the world spread over 1.9 square kilometers, it is a semi-enclave bordered by France to the north. With an area of 2.08 square km, the European is only the second-smallest sovereign state in the world, after Vatican City. Officially the Principality of Monaco, the country is a sovereign city-state and microstate on the French Riviera.

3. Nauru

Nauru is the third smallest country in the world, covering a total distance of 1 square kilometers. Larger than only Vatican City and Monaco, it the smallest republic and island nation known for its idyllic tropical landscape and rich marine biodiversity.

4. Tuvalu

The fourth smallest country in the world is Tuvaly. Covering a total area of 26 square kilometers, it is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean.

5. San Marino

San Marino is the fifth smallest country in the world, covering an area of 61 square kilometers. Mapped in northern Italy, San Marino is the oldest republic in the world situated on a beautiful mountain.

6. Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world, with a total area of 160 square kilometers. Officially known as the Principality of Liechtenstein, it is a doubly landlocked German-speaking microstate in the Central European Alps, between Austria in the east and north and Switzerland.

7. Marshall Islands

Officially known as the Republic of the Marshall Islands, it is an island country west of the International Date Line and north of the equator. Having a total area of 181 square kilometers, it’s spread across the Pacific Ocean.

The other three countries on the list are Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Maldives and Malta, having total areas of 261, 298, 316 square kms respectively.
